A pet parrot saved his owner from a big fire that destroyed his house shouting his name to wake him up. Anton Nguyen was sleeping when his house in Brisbane, Queensland, caught fire.
When his parrot, Eric, raised the alarm, Anton smelt smoke and ran out of his house just before it was engulfed in flames. According to firefighters, Anton woke up to the smell of smoke when the parrot had squawked ‘Anton! Anton!’ to sound the alarm.
Speaking to ABC, Anton said:
“I heard a bang and Eric, my parrot — he started to yell, so I woke up and I smelled a bit of smoke. I grabbed Eric, opened the door, and looked to the back of the house and saw some flames… and so I took off and bolted downstairs.
There were smoke detectors, [but] the bird alerted me before the smoke detectors went off.
I’m in shock but I’m fine.”
The firefighters took over an hour to control the fire. But unfortunately, the house caught fire completely.
The Queensland fire department confirmed to ABC News that the fire was contained in the Nguyen house. They are still investigating the cause.
