Erika Jeorgean Swart decided to travel with her 3 children but never expected her 9-year-old daughter to have a panic attack on the plane. After takeoff, Gabby began to feel very stressed about the trip from Orlando to Newark. The mother was very confused because the girl had flown before and had never been afraid to fly!
Gabby spent much of the flight in panic, and her mother could not calm her down. The child, who has Type 1 diabetes, was trying everything to relax, but nothing worked. Unfortunately, that was causing your blood sugar levels to drop! Erika didn’t think her daughter was bothering the other passengers until a steward appeared out of nowhere and handed Gabby a “special drink” to keep her quiet.
Erika’s husband was not with her on this trip, and she was doing everything she could to make sure all three of the children behaved. At that point, a flight attendant named Garrick decided to intervene. So Mom wrote a long Facebook posting on Southwest Airline to let them know what one of their employees did.
Next to the post was an image of him. Erika took a picture of the man in question so that the airline’s officers had no problem identifying him… but it was not to complain of the flight attendant that the mother wrote the lengthy text. It was to thank his good deeds!
“Throughout the flight he tried making her laugh and bringing her special drinks. As we were getting closer weather was rough and there was a bit of turbulence. Gabby began having a complete panic attack on descent.”
Garrick saw that Gabby was fighting, so he paid special attention to her. The man even asked if he could sit on the empty seat next to her! “During extremely rough turbulence she began crying and grabbed his arm, he gently told her she could hang on as long as she needed to. Just after this due to the extreme stress she was under her blood sugars began dangerously crashing. He got up from his seat to get her an orange juice and came right back to sit with her. She asked again if she could continue to hold his arm while the plane was landing.”
As the plane began to descend, Garrick distracted Gabby by suggesting they talked about something amusing. For 30 minutes, the attentive father, who has a daughter around Gabby’s age, talked to the girl about pets and about school. He knew exactly what he was doing, and when the plane landed, Gabby was quieter than a sleeping baby!
Surprise on the landing
But his good deeds continued when the plane arrived at the destination. “Once on the ground while taxiing to the gate he came on the intercom and announced that his friend, Gabby, in the front row overcame her fears of flying and asked for a round of applause. The whole plane clapped for her. It was a wonderful experience on Southwest. We are forever grateful to have met such a beautiful, selfless soul.”
William, from Southwest, responded by saying that a plane trip can be a scary situation for many, but their crews really care about the passengers. Due to publication, Garrick will receive the recognition he deserves for his kindness.
Share if you think the flight attendant also deserves a round of applause!
