Birthdays are huge occasions, especially for children. Presents, having fun with family and friends, delicious cake… all this makes the younger ones look forward to the big day. While Lexie’s family, a non-verbal girl, was busy preparing her ninth birthday party, something terrible was happening. Lexie was the only one present in the tragedy, but she couldn’t tell anyone.
Lexie has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair. She can’t walk or talk. On the day of her birthday party, danger was lurking nearby. Her younger brother Leeland, with 18 months, was in danger, and no one knew except the non-verbal girl.
Kelly Jackson, the children’s mother, went upstairs to change for the party. Meanwhile, the grandmother, Nancy Comeau-Drisdelle, took Leeland downstairs after he awoke from his nap. Nancy continued to prepare the party in the kitchen while Leeland ran around the house.
It was then that Lexie saw Leeland come out the unlocked patio door. He closed the door behind him and went straight to the family pool.
Girl with cerebral palsy saves brother
Lexie knew Leeland was in danger. But she could not run after him or scream for help… or at least that’s what everyone thought. Given the danger, the brave girl gathered all her strength and began to scream. She managed to point to the door as she screamed, alerting the family that something was wrong.
“All of the sudden, I’m upstairs and I hear her screaming… We’ve never heard her scream like that.” Nancy heard Lexie and immediately ran to her. It was then that the mother realized that Leeland was not in the house. “She’s yelling and she’s pointing at the door, and I realize Leeland’s not with her. I took off outside and I’m not seeing him. I ran, and he’s right by the edge (of the pool) and I took him out.”
It was a miracle that Leeland did not drown. He ingested water but, after being examined at the local hospital, the family was informed that he was well. Little Leeland owes everything to the older sister who, despite her physical limitations, saved his life. Lexie’s family said that it was a birthday they will never forget.
“I hugged her, I cried and I still thank her every day. Because honestly, in that matter, two seconds makes a huge difference.” The next day, the family put a fence around the pool. They also installed a locking gate between their house and the pool.
As for Lexie, the little super-heroine received awards from the Halifax Regional Police for her courage and determination to save her brother!
