When 13-year-old Courtney Hadwin stepped onto the stage of America’s Got Talent, no one knew what to expect. The girl was clearly nervous, so the judge Mel B tried to make her feel a little more comfortable. The artist gave words of encouragement to the girl, but never expected her to lose her shame so quickly. Courtney’s performance shocked everyone, and the judges were unanimous in their comments: she’s the next Janis Joplin!
Mel B begins by saying to the girl: “That’s okay to be nervous. Totally understandable.” “Listen. Don’t be nervous. I know it’s a big stage and there’s a lot of people here, but you’re here for a reason so go for it and good luck!”
From shy to star
As soon as they hear Hard to Handle, from Black Crowes, the judges were intrigued. Hadwin started dancing but it was not until she started singing that they realized how talented she was. All the judges gasped, showing how impressed they were with Courtney’s talent. The crowd also applauded vigorously, and gave a standing ovation to the girl.
Simon Cowell was impressed, saying “You were like this shy little thing when you came out, and then you sing and you’re like a lion. I mean, genuinely incredible!” Howie Mandel said “You are not from this era. You’re from a whole different era.”
Howie said she reminded him of singer Janis Joplin, whom he admired a lot. He told the story of how Janis Joplin was hired for the first time by Clive Davis, when he saw her at the Monterey Pop Festival. Joplin was young and unknown, but when Davis saw her performance, he knew he needed to hire her. And that’s how she started her incredible musical career.
The judge ends his speech with: “I’m not Clive Davis. I’m Howie Mandel and I can not sign you a record deal. The only thing I can do for you, young lady, is give you…” Suddenly, he jumps and presses the golden buzzer, ensuring the girl’s presence in the live shows.
Courtney was so impressed that tears fell down her face. This teen is a star on the rise. The amount of soul and passion we see when she sings is absolutely amazing!
