Some pets ask for treats… The smart dog, we’ll meet today, buys by himself!
In the last five years, the campus of the Institute of Diversified Technical Education of Colombia, houses a dog, called Negro. There, he serves as guardian while students study. In return, Negro is taken care of by the school faculty, which provides him with food, water, attention and a safe place to spend the night.
Since early, Negro became aware of the small shop on campus, where students gather to buy things in breaks, including cookies! As soon as he realized how the commercial activity worked, the puppy decided to try it for himself…
“He would go to the store and watch the children give money and receive something in exchange,” said Professor Angela Garcia Bernal. “Then one day he appeared with a leaf in his mouth, wagging his tail and letting it be known that he wanted a cookie.”
Negro invented his own coin and of course was accepted. He got a cookie and showed that the leaves can buy goodies!
After the puppy realized that his money literally grows on trees, going to the store became a routine. “He comes to get cookies every day,” said Gladys Barreto. “He always pays with a leaf. It’s his daily purchase.”
Here is a clip of Black in action:
The staff makes sure he only gets safe for dog treats, and they control his daily portions to keep the puppy from getting sick. “When you first see it, you almost want to cry.” Bernal said. “He found a way to make himself understood. He’s very intelligent.”
