Pope Francis spoke with a boy who is mourning the death of his dog, telling him not to worry that animals can go to heaven. His exact words were, “One day, we’ll see our animals again in the eternity of Christ.”, And “Heaven is open to all God’s creatures.”
Many people are confused because there is a long-standing theological position that animals have no souls, which means that they simply stop existing after their deaths.
“If the Pope meant that all animals go to heaven, then the implication is that animals have a soul.”, said Christine Gutleben, director of the Humane Society of the United States. “If this is true, then we should seriously consider how we treat them. We must admit that they are sentient beings, and they mean something to God.”
