Dog that spent 9 years locked in a garage meets love in his last years of life

Confinement is a painful and disturbing situation for anyone, indeed, it’s the mechanism used by society to punish those who have committed a serious crime.

But there are other beings whose freedom is taken away from the moment of birth. Such is the case of a puppy that has lived its entire life confined within the four walls of a garage.

Dick, who after 9 years, managed to leave the place where he was being held.

The dog was born in the garage of an estate in Maizicourt, France. And was kept locked up there for more than 9 years until he was rescued.

In this dirty and scary space, they kept him tied up.

Flore, a researcher for the 30 Millions d’Amis Foundation, remembers with great sadness the day she met this furry fellow.

“It was sweltering hot in this garage and the smell was unbearable. Dick was curled up at the bottom of that pit in the floor covered with layers of excrement“.

When we arrived with a bucket of water, he hesitated to come closer, but he was so terrified that he went back to his bed at the bottom of his hiding place”, said the rescuer.

To the dog who knew nothing but the misery of this sad place, the whole outside world was the cause of immense terror.

“We tried to put him on the leash, but he refused to go forward. We took him to the car, where he nestled into the seat. He barely dared to look at us and was shaking a lot”, said Flore on the day of the rescue.

Although the adaptation process was slow, the puppy managed to be rescued. And little by little he learned to trust his caretakers.

The foundation was not only in charge of rescuing the dog but of legally prosecuting its owner by filing a formal complaint with the police.

The man deserved to pay for his abuses.

The owner decided to transfer Dick’s care to the foundation, which took the furry fellow to the Buigny Saint Maclou shelter. There, the dog’s story touched all the caretakers.

“Dick has never known the color of the sky, never felt the grass under his paws, not even the wind at the tip of his snout. He has a terrible fear of human beings. As soon as he gets close, he freezes and shivers,” explained Lydie at the time from the Buigny shelter.

Dick was rescued in May 2017 and went through a slow process of adaptation. Unfortunately, her little heart stopped beating in 2020, but at least in her last years, she knew what true love was.

All his life he spent in that confinement and had it not been for the intervention of the foundation, his little eyes would never have known the sun.
