As we grow, we learn that the interior is much more important than the exterior. Unfortunately, thanks to the media, this concept can be extremely difficult to change. A boy named Aldrin was born with deformed legs, and all his colleagues intimidated him because of it. They said he looked like a flamingo. Despite the dozens of campaigns dedicated to preventing bullying in schools, the success of these efforts is still limited.
Intimidated for having deformed legs
Aldrin has a birth defect: a congenital dislocation in the knees, which causes them to bend in the opposite direction. Because of this unique condition, the boy was never able to stand. It was difficult for him to walk, and his legs caused him great pain.
Worse than physical pain was the emotional pain of being insulted by colleagues. Other children constantly mocked Aldrin, saying that his legs were like “a flamingo.” This destroyed the boy’s confidence, and he even began to feel that he had no purpose in life. Aldrin found that misery was everything the future had reserved for him.
Fortunately, this year, the 11-year-old boy had the help he sought. When the doctors heard of the boy’s condition, a hospital representative rushed over to Tim Tebow to tell him his story. Tim Tebow, an NFL football player, and was moved by Aldrin’s situation. He knew he had to meet him personally, since a boy very much like Aldrin had changed Tim’s life many years ago.
Tim was born in the Philippines and was raised by his parents, who were missionaries. They worked in the Philippines for more than 30 years, and when Tim was a teenager, his father took him on his first missionary trip to a remote island.
During this journey, Tim contacted a young Filipino named Sherwin. Sherwin had an extremely rare birth defect; according to Tim, “he used his feet behind.” He had been born this way and the orientation of his feet made walking very difficult.
Tim was inspired by Sherwin’s story, and wanted to help people like him. The memory of his time together remained in his mind when he founded the Tim Tebow Foundation, an organization that aims to “bring faith, hope and love to those who need a brighter day in their darkest hour of need.”
When Tim heard of Aldrin, he immediately thought of Sherwin and the difficulties he faced. There had no doubt in his mind: he had to do something to help this little boy.
Boy gets help
Aldrin was already 11 years old, and he would not recover as fast as he would have if he had had the surgery when he was younger, but that was not an option for him. The medical staff at Tebow CURE Hospital drew up a plan that would change Aldrin’s life forever.
The boy underwent a four-hour surgery. After that, something miraculous happened: he stood and walked normally. This was a huge change for Aldrin. He would no longer be the victim of bullying. He finally had the chance to live a life free from intimidation. The team’s help was immensely valuable to Aldrin’s mother, who never thought that day would come.
Aldrin is now practicing walking normally with the help of a walker, and it will not be long before he can walk on his own. His life has truly changed, all because of the compassion of a human being.
“Thank you Sherwin,” Aldrin said. “One life can really change another.”
