Lying motionless in front of a house known for the use of drugs, Suzi was barely conscious. Witnesses told police officers that neighborhood children had injected drugs into the dog, and a test eventually confirmed those suspicions. Both cocaine and THC were found in her system.
Suzi was taken to the Faithful Friends Animal Society, where the vets immediately connected her to intravenous fluids, to release the drugs from her system. They determined that she was probably only one year old.
“When she arrived, she could not walk, stand, eat or drink.”, said Kevin Rentz. “Our vets had never seen a mistreatment dealing with narcotics like this. It was heartbreaking.”
Over the next two days, Suzi continued with a steady stream of fluids to help drain the drugs, while the vets kept her comfortable inside her crate. “She could barely hold her head up and was barely responsive.”, Rentz said. “You could tell she did not know what was going on.”
Fortunately, a few days later, Suzi began to improve and captivated the veterinary staff with her sweet personality in the process. “She stole the hearts of all the vets and techs here.”, Rentz said. “Once the drugs had started leaving her system, you could see her personality perk up.”, said Rentz.
After a few more days, Suzi was running and playing with toys. “She would not let the ball out of her sight.”, Rentz said.
Because of the shocking nature of her rescue, Suzi became the star of the evening news, which helped her find a very special family in the process. Aida Alicea heard about Suzi on the news and took her family to the shelter to find the little dog.
“We were devastated to hear that someone, especially kids, would do something so cruel.”, said Rosa Alicea, daughter of Aida. “When we saw her for the first time, she was laying in the shelter cage and she just looked up at us. She was so calm, never barked, not fazed by all the barking around her.”
During the visit, she snuggled into a seat next to Rosa’s son, Jonathan, and couldn’t stop smiling.
Suzi was officially adopted on St Patrick’s Day. Now she is completely healthy and very happy next to her loving family!
“She is adjusting really well.”, Rosa added. “She is so well-mannered and gentle.”
The future of the little dog was at stake. But fortunately, the rescue team arrived in time to save her life. Share this exciting story with your friends and family!
