Patrick had been addicted to drugs for several years, and this caused him several problems on a personal level. When he was young, he was expelled from school for smoking cigarettes and marijuana. From there, everything started to get worse. His mother interned him in a psychiatric hospital to cure his addiction, but this method was not successful.

The young man became well known in the hospital, because he often fled and was re-admitted several times. “He complained a lot, and said that all they did was give him medication and treat him like a mental patient. He was not mentally ill, so he kept running,” says Patrick’s mother, Nancy. “But when he was out of the hospital, he would walk through the neighborhood completely naked, or rummage through the trash.”

While in the psychiatric hospital, Patrick’s habit became even worse, and he discovered a drug called Attain. “It’s not supposed to be used every day, but since he had access, he got hooked,” Nancy said. “It was just a few cents a pill. He even stole prescription papers and bought the chemicals.”

As Patrick showed no signs of recovery, he fled and began to walk the streets of Nairobi, disheveled and out of control. The man used drugs wherever he could and when he could. His mother still tried to help him by bringing food to him. “We were always a spectacle. People called each other to come and look, laugh and point at us while we ate. I was known as Mama wa wazimu (the madman’s mother).”
