Cat with rare conditions changes color completely

Some years ago, when Nicole Böhm rescued a pair of black and white kitten brothers living on a dirt farm in Germany, she had no idea that one of the cats would eventually give up her traditional look a little more interesting.

But that’s exactly what Elli did.

“She had a tuxedo coat like her sister,” Böhm said. “The change began about a year after birth.”

One day, Böhm noticed something strange in Elli’s coat. There, where his hair was already black, some white wicks appeared.

“It was just a little white spot on her back,” Böhm said. “I did not know why, so I took her to the vet.”

Turns out, Elli was diagnosed as having vitiligo, a rare condition that causes a loss of pigmentation, leading to white patches of skin and hair. Although she is sometimes tied to other medical problems, Elli was totally healthy.

But what began as some white spots on Elli’s body soon turned into something exceptionally beautiful.

In the weeks and months that followed, Böhm watched as the black portions of Elli’s coat began to turn white.

“I was surprised,” she said. “I’m still surprised.”

Elli’s appearance kept changing …

… and changing.

Despite suffering a dramatic physical transformation, Elli’s sweet nature remained unchanged.

“She’s as cute and adorable and as playful as she was on the first day,” Böhm said.

Elli’s sister, whose coat has not changed, still treats her exactly as usual.

Most important is that Elli is healthy and happy. Her special look just makes her more adorable – and still has not diminished.

Böhm said that Elli’s hair is still whitening, but she suspects that some black marks, such as those on her face, will remain.

Looking back, however, it is clear that she has come a long way.

For Böhm, seeing the lovely transformation of her rescued cat made sharing a life with her even more enchanting.

“Her change still happens every day, and I love her more and more,” she said.
