The soldier, Vance McFarland, spent some time in Afghanistan detecting explosive devices with the help of a Czech Shepherd named Ikar. The four-legged soldier was trained to detect explosives and has always been distinguished for doing exemplary work.
When McFarland’s mission was over, Ikar was directed to a new training program. However, was subjected to a very different fate…
There was no immediate need for Ikar’s services once he arrived in Afghanistan, so he should stay in the kennel for a few weeks. Instead, the poor dog was sheltered for 17 long and miserable months.
When the Mission K9 Rescue learned of the Ikar situation, they decided to intervene. Kristen Maurer, the organization’s president, worked to free Ikar and a few other dogs that had been separated. These dogs sacrificed their lives and were considered heroes, but they were not being treated as such.
McFarland woke up one morning and discovered a multitude of messages on Facebook. The soldier was crushed to find out what had happened to his best friend. Fortunately, the Mission K9 Rescue managed to send Ikar and other dogs home.
McFarland thought Ikar would not remember him. However, as soon as the pair laid eyes on each other, their fears vanished.
