Boy visits a shelter and adopts the oldest dog there

In November 2017, Shey, a 14-year-old Poodle, was dropped off at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa for the saddest reason: his family moved out and left the puppy behind.

For the next four months Shey waited at the shelter until someone chose him. He was suffering from dental disease and had never been neutered. So during this time he faced surgery and veterinary care. Being deaf, half blind and almost toothless, there wasn’t exactly a line of adopters waiting for him.

However, when a boy named Tristan came in the shelter, none of that mattered. He and his mother were looking for a small dog and the shelter knew that Shey would be the perfect companion. “Shey is super sweet and wants to be around people all the time.”, said Jessica Jorgenson, digital content coordinator for the rescue.

When they placed Shey on Tristan’s lap, the look on the boy’s face was pure joy. “Shey was very comfortable with Tristan from the beginning.”, said Jorgenson.

“He understood that Shey couldn’t hear what was going on and might not be able to see things clearly, so he was very slow with his actions.”, Jorgenson said. “He was just very respectful of what Shey could and couldn’t handle.” In addition, the boy told the staff all about the special place he had for the dog in his bedroom.

“He was so aware of Shey’s special needs.”, added Jorgenson. “Tristan is very mature for his age and asked a ton of questions.”

Now, comfortably at home with his family, Shey has already found a favorite place: Tristan’s arms. Although the dog has waited a long time for a family, Tristan is doing all he can to make up for lost time.

Shey’s future was uncertain… Fortunately, this incredible family did everything they could to provide him with a life of love and care.

The world would be a better place if there were more people like this lovely boy. Share if you agree!
