It was a completely normal day when Charmaine Keevy went out to walk her dog, Georgie, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The 63-year-old woman and her Dachshund usually take a different route, but for some reason, Keevy decided to walk somewhere else.

Suddenly, Georgie began to bark as they walked through a drain. “At first I thought it was a cat, because he’s afraid of cats, but when I heard the screams again, I realized it was a baby.” Said Keevy.
The woman quickly sought help from Cornie Viljoen, a man passing on Sedan Avenue, and he used a steel bar to raise the drain cover. The newborn was naked and still had the umbilical cord attached. In addition, Viljoen found an army of ants near the baby…
“I didn’t know if the baby was injured so I tried to pick her up very carefully and very slowly and she was so small.”, Viljoen said. “I just wanted to hold her for a while but I knew that she needed urgent medical help..” Emergency vehicles arrived to take the baby, who suffered from hypothermia and respiratory problems, to a hospital.
“I honestly believe I was meant to find that baby, especially because I usually take a different route on our walks. I cannot help but feel that there is some sort of plan and a purpose for that little girls’ life – it is a miracle without a doubt.”, Keevy said.
The hospital staff called the newborn Grace April, and police is still trying to locate her mother. “She’s fine at the moment, but caught a viral infection because of exposure to cold, but she’s a fighter and getting stronger,” Viljoen said.
Keevy posted on Facebook an update confirming that the baby “is alive and comfortable in an incubator.” “She is a precious little girl chosen by God. She has a purpose and a destiny.”
