A little dog, named Hunter, thought he would have a home and a family that would love him forever. Unfortunately, he was wrong…
Last week, the 6-year-old dog was surrendered to the Houston Humane Society in Texas. Hunter’s “owners” said the animal wasn’t getting along with the new puppy in the house and they didn’t want him anymore. Unsurprisingly, the poor animal was ruined!
Randi Bertholet has been volunteering at the Houston Humane Society for seven years and was one of the first people to interact with Hunter.
“When I walked up to the kennel, at first I didn’t even see a dog in there, until I looked in the corner. I saw him frozen with fear, trying to be invisible.”, Said Bertholet. “I immediately sat on the floor, turned away from him, waiting for him to come to me. After a few minutes he cautiously approached me.”
Bertholet shared a video of that delicate moment with the caption: “Ever wonder what a broken heart looks like? Well, there you have it.”
Bertholet just wanted to comfort Hunter
“I was heartbroken for him,” Bertholet said. “I cried that night while laying in bed with my dogs, thinking of him alone and scared.”
When Hunter’s story spread, the adoption offerings began to appear. Then, with any luck, the pup will not stay long without the love and affection that all dogs deserve.
“I never thought my video would get the response it did,” Bertholet said. “But I’m so happy about it.”
Unfortunately, the Hunter case is not isolated
It seems that some people see their pets more as disposable accessories than real members of their families. Shelters across the world are full of abandoned dogs and cats.
Bertholet wants Hunter’s story to inspire these people to take care of their animals in a more responsible and humane way. “I’m hoping this sheds a real light on the reality of what dogs go through when their owners drop them off,” she said.
