Jimmy Nicholos is a simple man with a great love for animals and especially for his fellow adventurer Boots. He is a service dog that has been with him for years and in which he has taken special refuge recently.
The man and Boots made a great team together.
Jimmy has nowhere to live, but works part-time at START Rescue Resale Store, a store that sells second-hand goods in Sherman Oaks, a neighborhood outside Los Angeles.
The store helps fund adoptions of rescued pets, so for the man, his job is very important.
In the store, the man often deals with different people and many of them acquire a certain trust and even affection. So when a woman offered to take care of Boots and bathe him while he worked, Jimmy did not hesitate and immediately accepted the offer.
It wasn’t the first time that the guide dog had taken care of that person.
But that day things did not go as expected and after a few hours, the lady returned to the store and told Jimmy that his beloved Boots had disappeared. Apparently, he had lost him in a park on his way to the store.
The news was a blow to the man who felt completely lost without his dog.
Boots became everything to Jimmy, a man who led a simple life, but found calm in his pet.
“He is my baby, he is my son. I have two children that I was never able to raise and when that happened, he was the only thing that kept me sane. He never asked for anything, just a little love. I have no words,” said Jimmy.
Renee Ruston, the owner of the store where Nicholos worked, witnessed the man’s distress and decided to help him file a complaint at the police station. Someone must have seen Boots and it was necessary to find him, out of love for him and for this beggar.
Many people joined the noble cause.
Ruston even helped spread the story online and offered a $5,000 reward for anyone who helped them recover Boots, as his employee was devastated.
“He’s in pieces. This dog is not only a service dog for him, but his reason for being,” confessed Jimmy’s boss.
But within the story there was something not quite right for Mrs. Ruston, who felt a certain suspicion toward the woman and her story because it all seemed so strange to her.
Her sixth sense led her to the right path.
The doubts were well founded, as Ruston explained to the police:
“Everything is very vague … When I ask questions, he says he doesn’t remember and stopped communicating with us the day after he disappeared.”
The incident happened on New Year’s Eve, so the man had a lot of fun, but at least he had his co-workers and his boss at that time. These people were very supportive.
“I don’t give up. I’m not going to let this become yesterday’s news. I’ll get my baby back if it’s the last thing I do,” said the man during the disappearance.
Fortunately, no one has thrown in the towel on this one.
“The START team sent out hundreds of flyers, hired a private investigator, had a lawyer file a lawsuit, and worked around the clock to find Jimmy’s best friend Boots,” said the grieving owner.
The case still went out in the local TV medium, and given the spread, news of the furry fellow did not wait. After two weeks of being missing, someone reported the whereabouts of the service dog.
“Minutes after the show aired, a person called and said ‘I’m with your dog. Jimmy and Boots met at midnight this morning and there was no dry eye anywhere,” the store said in a statement.
The meeting took place at the Van Nuy police station and, although Jimmy could not believe it, his beloved Boots was there. We don’t know how there are so many malicious people in this world but at least this story had a happy ending and all thanks to the solidarity of so many people who love the dog and his owner.
Good always triumphs, even if things seem difficult. We applaud all the support that the boss and colleagues gave to this homeless man. Now Jimmy and Boots continue their happy life.
